We arrived in Portland, Maine with a few hours left of daylight. The hiking in New Hampshire got us very hungry, so dinner was our first stop. We had lobster rolls at Bite into Maine food truck by the Portland Lighthouse.
It started to rain halfway through dinner and it was getting cold with the sun setting, but I couldn’t stop grinning because we were in Maine and dinner was delicious!
For dessert, we stopped at a gelato shop next to our hotel before calling it a day. We stayed at the Hyatt Place Old Port, highly recommend. It’s located in the historic old port district with great views of the street. Portland hotels are a little expensive so if you’re looking for a better deal I’d use hotel points like I did. The next morning we had their complimentary breakfast, it was one of the best I’ve ever had.
The next day I explored Old Port. It’s an interesting mix of brick cobblestone and new shops & restaurants. We were there during the week so the other tourists were an older crowd. It reminded me of Saugatuck. We spent the afternoon there but had to leave to set up camp in Acadia National Park.
Our campground, Mount Desert Campground, was amazing. It’s the only campground with an Island Explorer shuttle stop, the free shuttle service by the national park, and bathrooms with showers. The campground is on the smaller side so it’s only for tents and smaller RVs. I liked that but it’s not for everyone. I picked a site with views of Somes Sound. Those sites have wooden platforms for tents in case of rising water and you have to walk everything in. It was a 2-3 minute walk but you had to watch your step for gnarly roots. It was so worth it though. Definitely go if you’re up for it. I did have to book it at the beginning of the year, as soon as reservations opened.
